Travelling to the Nordics in Spring: Recommended Destinations and Adventures for Active Visitors

Spring holidays offer the best of both worlds. When the winter ice and snow have begun to thaw and melt, the astonishing beauty of new life starts to flourish, and incredible places that are cut off during the depths of winter beg to be explored, yet without the queues and crowds associated with the summer season.

The Nordics—the region covering Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Greenland, Iceland, and Norway, alongside smaller island destinations like the Faroe Islands and Svalbard—are often considered the ideal locations for active outdoor spring holidays.

Today's travel insights, provided by the specialists in custom and bucket list travel experiences at the Baltic Travel Company, share suggested destinations, activities, and excursions to make this spring one to remember.

The Appeal of Adventurous Nordic Holidays in the Spring

Travellers and guests heading to the Nordic region typically want something a little less conventional from their holiday experiences, whether they are tired of coastal resorts, prefer to travel outside of the sweltering hot summers, or are passionate about culture, nature and discovering something new.

This is part of the appeal of the Nordic countries, the European region covering an extraordinary 1.2 million square kilometres with almost no areas of significant population density. That means the rivers, hot springs, glaciers, icebergs, fjords, lakes and mountain meadows thrive and often remain untouched by people.

We often hear from repeat visitors who pick the spring as their preferred time to travel. The warmer weather provides relief from the cold, and the longer days offer a wonderful diversity of experiences, from adventure sports to bird watching to seeing rare species return from their migration.

Popular activities include everything from rowing across lakes and bear watching in remote forests, kayaking, cycling, and horseback adventures to guided tours to see some of the world's largest and most spectacular glaciers and waterfalls.

Of course, there remain ample opportunities for families and laidback travellers to relax, soak in the expansive panoramic views, and explore the finest cuisines and cultural attractions in the cities, but the period when the snow melts and outdoor life starts to come to life is simply magical.

Top Destinations for Spring Holiday Packages in the Nordics

It would be impossible to showcase every holiday and package we have curated, but to give you a taste of the experiences and trips available, we’ve put together a small selection of our personal favourites here at the Baltic Travel Company.

We’ll start with our Wonders of Ilulissat six-day holiday to Greenland, heading to the west coast, which is near the Arctic Circle and home to the famous Ilulissat Ice Fjord. The town blends modern conveniences with a proud Inuit culture, and there is no end to unique experiences and excursions to choose from.

You can try whale watching in Disco Bay or an exhilarating hike to Sermermiut, a midnight sailing trip or a day cruise to see the Eqi Glacier. There really is something for everyone, with opportunities to cruise between the towering icebergs, see seals and marine life, and explore the permafrost settled on the ancient ruins, accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide.

Our next recommendation is the Summer Adventure on Top of the World, with travel dates beginning in May towards the late spring. While this part of Norway is in demand during the winter due to the prevalence of the Northern Lights, the midnight sun season offers something completely different.

From quad biking and hiking to walrus safaris, the magnificent scenery comes into its own when the ice and snow melt away, with thousands of travelling birds and local Svalbard reindeer roaming the countryside. A big favourite is a dining experience onboard a hybrid catamaran where you can sail through the mountainous scenery of Isfjorden while sampling local delicacies.

Finally, we’d suggest the Finnish four-day Lake Escape trip for a short break away from the hustle and bustle, where you can enjoy springtime in the heart of Finnish Lakelands, staying at the fabulous Jarvisydan Spa on the shore of Saimaa Lake.

The concealed Lake Spa is tucked into the forest and provides a wealth of sumptuous spa and beauty treatments, including saunas, hot tubs and outdoor activities in the surrounding lake and forest.

Whether you'd love to try a yoga class immersed in nature, join a seal-watching trip, hike along the winding forest trails, or simply sit and watch the world go by, this holiday is all about relaxation and enjoyment.

Must-Try Activities and Outdoor Sports for Thrill-seekers

The Nordics might be famous for their unbeatable skiing and winter sports, but springtime remains a focal point for higher-octane activities. Active holidays are available for experienced sportspeople, those sampling diving, kayaking, or hiking for the first time, and families.

Iceland’s Thrihnukagigur volcano is a great option. It last erupted over 4,000 years ago and now offers guests the chance to explore the inside of the dormant volcano. A hike to the crater and a cable lift carry you 400 feet to the bottom of the interior.

Glacier hiking is also an excellent option, although some routes are better suited to those keen to take on a greater challenge. Sweden’s well-known The King’s Trail is an alternative, covering an enormous distance but with countless entry and exit points to ensure you can customise your hike to your abilities and travel dates.

If you’d love to make the most of the warmer sea waters, diving in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Denmark, is the ideal location, with better visibility in the winter and early spring, alongside other outdoor water-based activities such as surfing.

Last but not least, if you’re looking to book an adventure holiday of a lifetime, you might wish to consider one of the Nordic national parks, such as Urho Kekkonen National Park in Finnish Lapland. This park is popular for skiing in winter and trekking in the spring and summer, and it offers marked cycling routes, fishing, canoeing, bird watching, and horseback riding throughout the season.
