27% fewer Brits have moved abroad in 2022 compared to 2021, despite inflation and the cost of living crisis looming over the population this Winter states states online transport marketplace Shiply

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has had devastating effects on the cost of living throughout Europe due to the country’s strong control over the gas supply. Recent reports have shown that more Brits are searching online about moves abroad than ever, looking to cut their costs and find a more affordable place to live. Shiply looked into their data to see how severely the effects of the crisis are impacting international moves. It showed that, whilst Brits may be searching about moving abroad more, the first 6 months of 2022 saw a 27% decrease in international moves when compared to 2021. This number increases to a 48% drop when compared to 2020.

Robert Matthams, founder of Shiply, commented that “with inflation and the cost of living crisis going on in the UK at the moment it is understandable that Brits are looking at other countries where their money may go further. However, financial uncertainty for the future has led to fewer people actually taking the leap, and we may have to wait until the bills hit in Winter to see the true effects of this crisis on international moves”.

Shiply, used by several million customers since 2008, allows users to list their house move requests, both domestic and international, on the site and receive multiple quotes from removal companies. These prices are often at a cost of a few hundred pounds rather than a few thousand as the movers compete to win your job.

Shiply, founded in 2008, is an online transport marketplace that matches people needing to move goods with transport companies going there anyway. It is estimated that over 25% of lorries and vans run empty of cargo and 50% run only part-full in the UK. By making use of this spare capacity, Shiply dramatically cuts down on wasteful CO2 emissions whilst also increasing the profitability of transport companies and offering up to 75% off standard rates for consumers/SME’s.
