Working in home care is highly demanding, with considerable job security given the need for compassionate, warm and dedicated carers and huge shortages in the workforce. However, you don't necessarily need a pre-existing care qualification to become an experienced, skilled carer with a salary or pay rate to match.

The Guardian Angel Carers home care company has compiled some tips and advice for those interested in pursuing a care career, with guidance on certifications, the value of character, and a summary of the on-the-job training offered to candidates who match the company’s commitment to quality, family-feel care.

The Diversity of Home Care Vacancies and Positions

Our first pointer is that the level of qualification needed for home care jobs can vary significantly.

There is a big difference between being an accomplished, capable visiting carer, providing domiciliary and companionship care, and delivering specialist care services to people and families with long-term conditions or needing professional rehabilitative care following surgery or a hospital stay.

As a quick snapshot, some of the well-paid, rewarding roles available within the nationwide Guardian Angel Carers network – none of which require a current qualification – include:

  • Daytime care workers supporting people with limited mobility and helping with personal care and meal preparation.
  • Weekend care assistants working varied hours with additional pay for peak times between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., caring for families and individuals in the local area.
  • Companionship carers ensuring those living in their communities alone have a friendly face, a warm chat and a nutritious meal during the day.
  • Early bird care assistants, working three mornings a week within fixed hours to help with morning routines – from preparing breakfast to dressing and getting ready for the day.

Home care is a hugely diverse setting, and it is as flexible as you need to be. For example, we commonly advertise positions with adjustable working hours, shifts based only in the mornings, evenings or over the weekends, or posts with fixed hours per week.

This structure ensures that fantastic carers can always find their perfect role and fit their career around other commitments and obligations – regardless of how many hours per week or month they can commit to.

Qualification Routes to Become a Higher Skilled UK Home Care Professional

The Guardian Angel Carers team is committed to providing progression opportunities – some of our senior leadership team at our head office first joined the company as CareAngels.

We provide an exceptional level of training, mentoring and financial support to help you achieve all you are capable of, whether you’d like to hold a formal NVQ or want to become a specialist carer as your long-term career aspiration.

Every CareAngel receives a funded Care Certificate – an important qualification that involves professional training to teach the skills and capabilities necessary to deliver high-quality, empathetic and respectful care in a person’s own home.

From there, the choice is yours. Financial assistance can help you work towards an NVQ, with many carers opting for an NVQ in Health and Social Care, with qualifications available at Levels 1 and 2.

You could also use your real-world experience to progress towards a Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Care, a T Level in Health (equivalent to roughly three A Levels) or a degree course in Health and Social Care.

These qualifications are important for carers providing a higher level of care, although experience may be just as valuable - for example:

  • A Care Coordinator typically needs a Level 3 in Health and Social care and a passing GCSE mark in Maths and English.
  • A Care Team Leader should have at least two years of relevant care experience.
  • Specialist carers may require an NVQ at a certain level, a specific training certificate relevant to the condition they are focusing on, or experience supporting service users living with that condition.

We’re always keen to stress that personal character, an upbeat attitude, and the ability to be friendly, and listen to the needs and preferences of the service user are just as key as qualifications – ensuring each person you visit feels heard, listened to, respected, and retains the autonomy to make decisions about the care and assistance they receive.

Where roles carry a mandatory qualification level, we include this within our recruitment ads. We are always happy to chat about vacancies published via the Guardian Angel Carers website and which accreditations would be beneficial.

Personal Skills Essential to Home Care Professionals

The primary requirements for most community care roles are the ability to speak, read and write in good English, have reliable transportation and a full driving licence, and be available for the required hours.

No carer begins work in the community before completing their Care Certificate. Newly qualified carers are commonly paired with an experienced carer to act as a mentor while they learn the ropes, get to know their clients in the area, and ensure they can confidently deliver the right level of care independently.

Skills that are fundamental to care work include:

  • A sensitive nature and an appreciation of the individual, taking time to listen and understand their wishes.
  • The drive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people and families you support, providing practical care but also being a familiar face and a comforting presence.
  • An ability to work collaboratively or independently – coordinating with other carers but being happy to attend a visiting care placement alone where necessary.
  • Excellent attention to detail, whether providing medication reminders, updating care checklists or confirming that a care visit has been completed.
  • Patience: never expecting a patient who is older, unwell, or with limited mobility to try to move or respond faster than feels comfortable and secure, and taking as much time as is needed when helping with personal care, from bathing, dressing and eating to assisting with care around the home.

Great carers often say that home care is their calling – but they should also be recognised and rewarded for their efforts and the often profound impacts they have on the lives of the people they serve and the families they support.
