Chase Buchanan, the international specialist in wealth management and financial advisory services for global expatriates, has welcomed Paul Herd, APFS and Certified Financial Planner, to its busy Portuguese offices in the Algarve.

This latest appointment is part of an ongoing strategic expansion. The wealth management firm is increasing its service capacity to meet continuing demand, particularly from affluent expats relocating from the UK and other regions around Europe and North America.

Increased Financial Advisory Capacity at Chase Buchanan’s Portuguese Office

Paul has a long-standing reputation as a finance professional, with 35 years of experience in the financial services industry and a background in both personal and corporate client relations. His background as a pension transfer specialist and previous role as an independent adviser is an excellent fit for the multi-skilled Chase Buchanan Portuguese team.

Having achieved the ‘gold standard’ Chartered Financial Planner designation in 2012, Paul also has first-hand experience as a British expatriate. He relocated to Portugal with his wife Debbe and four daughters, lending him insights to assist expats going through the same transition.

Alongside his colleagues, Paul is based at the Chase Buchanan location in Quarteira. It is well positioned within the Algarve; a popular hotspot for second property owners, international investors, retirees, and families seeking a higher quality of life in this beautiful part of the world.

The advisory team is on hand to support clients at all stages of an international move with every aspect of their finances and wealth, including:

  • Lump-sum savings
  • Investments
  • Retirement planning
  • Education fee management
  • Cross-border pension transfers
  • Critical illness and family protection products

A blend of localised knowledge of the Portuguese tax landscape and the regulations, financial implications, and complexities of tax residency evaluations and double tax treaties ensures that the on-the-ground advisers can provide added-value assistance across the board.

Meeting Demand for Independent Expat Wealth Management in Portugal

Chase Buchanan is known for providing trusted advice in an uncomplicated way. It operates as a wholly independent wealth management and financial advisory network with no affiliations with any financial service or product provider, insurance company, or financial institution.

This degree of autonomy allows advisers in Portugal and throughout the other Chase Buchanan locations to provide recommendations and suggestions based entirely on the solutions, strategies and plans they feel will most benefit their clients.

Paul’s background incorporates investment and pension advisory services, bespoke, holistic support for clients as a CFP and IFA, and positions in insurance protection. These all slot into the service offering seamlessly, with a shared interest in clarity and transparency.

Lee Eldridge, Group CEO and Head of Investment Advisory at Chase Buchanan says, ‘Paul is a fantastic addition to our team in Portugal and will complement the strengths and specialisms of our existing Private Wealth Managers as we continue to grow and keep pace with sustained demand from expatriates relocating as well as those with cross-border portfolios.

With an expat community of tens of thousands of residents and over 46,000 British nationals living in Portugal, we have found that the need for reliable, customised and trusted advice has grown significantly, particularly following events such as Brexit, reforms to the Portuguese ‘golden visa’ program and adjustments to tax regimes open to expats in the country.’

The Importance of Independent Financial Guidance for Portuguese Expat Residents

Accredited and experienced wealth managers work to assist clients over the long term, learning their aspirations and factoring in plans such as purchasing a property in Portugal, restructuring UK investment assets, and saving for children's education fees.

Wealth managers go beyond straightforward product suggestions and develop robust strategies adapted to the individual or family's life stage, expectations, and risk appetite.

Proactive planning can optimise tax efficiencies, create accurate budgets that account for contingencies, and ensure that finances are appropriately structured, monitored, and managed to finance the lifestyle an expat in Portugal may expect.

Lee adds, ‘Those currently living in the Algarve or planning a move are welcome to contact Paul and the rest of the team in Portugal at any time to arrange an in-person or virtual consultation and to begin the first steps in crafting a future-proof, bespoke financial plan.’
